United States Cattle on Feed Down 3 Percent. Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.8 million head on February 1, 2014. The inventory was 3 percent below February 1, 2013.

In this week’s ethanol report, corn grind came in almost 2 million bushels below the annualized rate needed to meet the USDA’s end of year target. For the crop year, corn for ethanol is 34 million bushels behind pace. Current rail logistics issues are likely have more to do with weekly production as current ethanol profits remain a positive.

January 1 Cattle Inventory Down 2 Percent -- All cattle and calves in the United States as of January 1, 2014 totaled 87.7 million head, 2 percent below the 89.3 million on January 1, 2013. This is the lowest January 1 inventory of all cattle and calves since the 82.1 million on hand in 1951. Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.6 million head on January 1, 2014. The inventory was 5 percent below January 1, 2013. The inventory included 6.78 million steers and steer calves, down 4 percent from the previous year.

The corn for ethanol grind rebounded 4% (4 mln bu) from last week now at 96.8 million bushels and 0.6 million bushels above the average grind needed to reach the USDA’s 5 billion bushel estimate. Ethanol stocks increased 6% from last week now at 17 million barrels vs. 16.1 million barrels previously. The 6% jump is the largest single week stocks increase since November 2012.
